Undoubtedly, the greatest attraction toward Kabini is the sight of the Big Cat. If during a safari, one does not get to see the Tiger most often than not, they will make a second attempt to spot it. Tiger sightings being unpredictable have now become a matter of chance. However, for the lucky few who manage to spot him during a safari, rest assured, they leave with an everlasting memory etched in their minds.
During the evening safari today, as the weather was sultry we decided to drive towards the river side expecting some good sightings. On our way, we spotted a huge Tusker romping bamboo shoots; much like a child playing with his food before actually consuming it. We stopped our vehicle and watched him entertain himself. He was delightfully amusing!
While we were busy observing the Tusker, we heard an alarm call from a Sambar Deer coming from a distance. We followed the direction of the sound. Nearing the spot, we saw a throng of vehicles; everyone was waiting for the predator to come out.
We too waited for a while, but to no avail. We returned to the river bank where we saw many Spotted Deer peacefully grazing.
We also spotted a Hanuman Langur swinging between the branches. We were enjoying the diverse sight for a while when suddenly the peace was broken by the alarm call from the Langur. The jeep driver Jaimohan exclaimed with excitement “Tiger…. Tiger”!
A beautiful tigress was crossing the road in front of our vehicle. Everyone managed to get at least a glimpse of her; as she soon disappeared into the thick bushes.
I quickly took as many pictures as I could. With the sight of the Tigress firmly imprinted in our minds we headed back to the resort. Needless to say, the guests kept talking about it the entire day.
